Straight Natural HairOkay, I read your emails, tweets, and FB messages… It’s time to update :) September 26, 2010 officially marked my 2 year transition to natural hair. I have no clue how I forgot, but one of my LHCF buddies had to clue me in. Am I happy? Of course!!! I’m at a point where I’m just in love with my hair. It’s like I get the best of both worlds… One day I’m rocking a FIERCE fro and the next day it will be pin straight! When I first decided to transition I was in the midst of a three month stretch and really could not imagine making it this far. A few times I seriously considered the Big Chop. One time I was so confused… I almost shaved my head completely. *Gasp* Just thinking about it makes me feel a certain way. Thanks so much to all my readers, friends, and family, for the well wishes and encouragement. I would not have made it this far without you!

Right now, I have about 3-5 inches of relaxed ends and the crown area of my hair is fully natural. Many readers have asked me when I’m going to chop the rest of my relaxed hair off… but I have no plans to do so anytime soon. The shortest layers of my natural hair are just past shoulder length… and anybody who has read my blog knows that I cant do the “in-between” stage again. I just can’t. And most people cant even tell that I’m not fully natural when my hair is not straight. Honestly, I hardly ever notice the relaxed ends unless my hair is wet. Check out my fro in the picture below (I’ll have some wet hair pictures when I do an upcoming post on my 50-11 textures).

Afro Natural Hairstyle

I’m just going to push this transition at least another year. By that time my hair should be completely natural. I’ve been maintaining my hair at BSL since last Spring, and I’ll probably continue trimming my hair to remain that length until next year. So what have I been doing to my hair since August. Nada. I’ve mostly been rocking a co-washed pony for the last month. Once in a while I would break out the fro. But right now I’m sick of the single strand knots so I decided to wear my hair straightened for the next couple of weeks. No matter how much I detangle, those single strand knots always find a way to ruin my day! But I have an answer for those knots. HEAT!!! I know it isn’t the solution for everybody, but it’s going to work for me, lol.

Last, let’s talk my about my current regimen. I’ve been getting a lot of emails about this topic. My regimen has been so simple lately. I’ll do an updated post on it soon. For now I just shampoo and deep condition my hair once a week. And co-washed my hair pretty much every day (Ha Ha!) using my new beloved VO5 Passion Fruit Smoothie Conditioner (Review Coming Soon!). That stuff smells so good and it’s so CHEAP. LOL! The only downside is that the ingredients aren’t the best, but you can’t expect much when you pay 80 cents for a bottle… It gets the job done. Anyway, I’ve typed enough. I’m hoping to get some more posts up by next week.

ETA: Currently catching up on emails, comments, and interview requests

EdgeStick Pressing Comb

Note: EdgeStick is now offering HairMilk.com readers 20% off. Click Here To Purchase.

Name: EdgeStick Ceramic Styling Comb

Price: $69.00 (Consumer Model) and $79.00 (Professional Model)

Rating: 4 out of 5

Product Promise: The Azure EdgeStick™ is a professional styling tool that can help you manage your hair, and is suitable for all hair types and textures: coarse, curly, straight, thick and fine. And, it is safe to use on color-treated hair.

The standout feature is the double-comb design with ceramic-coated barrel. The comb separates the individual hair strands at the hairline and roots, allowing the hair to glide untangled across the heated ceramic-coated barrel to achieve an instantly smooth appearance. And unlike any other tool in the industry, the EdgeStick™ lets you get closest to the hair root – even touching the scalp – without the danger of burning your scalp, face, or ears.

The Review:

I recently received an EdgeStick Ceramic Styling Comb from Family Affair Hair Care, the authorized US distributor, in the mail to review. The EdgeStick is a digital temperature controlled new age pressing comb (Up to 400F, 450F on the professional model) . It’s very light-weight and consists of a small barrel enclosed with comb teeth on both sides. So how did it perform?

I used very small sections to press the front and sides of my head that were reverting from a week old flatiron job. What I loved about the EdgeStick was that it kept good on it’s promise not to burn like old school pressing combs did. I didn’t feel a thing! It’s one of the reasons why I stick to flatirons instead of pressing combs… I’m terrified to get burned and re-live childhood memories of burning smells of Blue Magic and getting scorched by a pressing comb. But the EdgeStick did a perfect job of straightening my roots while providing an amazing shine. I’m serious… I’m talking next level Sedu shine! Below is a picture of my hair after using the EdgeStick. I apologize in advance… was rushing for a wedding and didn’t have time for before and afters/closeups before I left out. Again, I only used it on my sides and the front of my hair.

EdgeStick

The only problem I ran into was that the teeth are very small, so there was no way I was going to attempt to run this from my roots to my ends. You have to use very small sections, and for all of that… you’re better off using a flat iron. If the manufacturers developed a a larger version with wider teeth I would definitely recommend it for pressing your entire head. But for now… the EdgeStick is a winner for anyone with a short hairstyle, touching up new growth on relaxed hair and straightened natural hair. It would also be a perfect tool for women who are transitioning to natural while primarily wearing their hair straight. Because it definitely will get your roots straight! Just make sure to use heat protectant and try to use the lowest heat setting possible.

Below is a demonstration of the EdgeStick. You can purchase the EdgeStick and save 20% off by clicking HERE.

Willow Smith unveiled her much-buzzed-about video for “Whip My Hair, my fav song of the moment, earlier this week. I’m sooo in love with the faux ‘hawk shaped heart hairstyle and could not help but chuckle at the toddler and grandma hair-whipping towards the end. According to Willow, “‘Whip My Hair’ means don’t be afraid to be yourself, and don’t let anybody tell you that that’s wrong. Because the best thing is you.” Check out the video directed by Ray Kay below.

Willow Smith -Whip My Hair Lyrics

(chorus)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (just whip it)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (whip it real good)
I whip my hair back and forth x4

Hop up out the bed turn my swag on
Pay no attention to them haters
Because we whip em off
And we ain’t doin nothin wrong
So don’t tell me nothin
I’m just trying to have fun
So keep the party jumping
So whats up? (yeah)
You know they don’t know what to do
we turn our back and whip our hair…
shake em off (x4)

Don’t let haters get me off my grind
Whip my hair, if I know I’ll be fine
Keep fighting until I get there
When I’m down and I feel like giving up

(chorus x3)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (just whip it)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (whip it real good)
I whip my hair back and forth x4

Imma get more shine in a little bit
soon as I hit the stage
applause I’m hearing it
weather it’s Flagstaff, flag heart, I’m feeling it

But aint none of them will feel like I do (I)
I get the to them mm-yeah go hard
want to see me pull up
I whip it real hard x2
Real hard
I Whip it real hard

Don’t let haters get me off my grind
Whip my hair, if I know I’ll be fine
Keep fighting until I get there
When I’m down and I feel like giving up

(chorus x2)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (just whip it)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (whip it real good)
I whip my hair back and forth x4

(x2)
All my ladies if you feel it
Gone and do it, do it
Whip your hair (whip your hair)
Don’t matter if it’s long, short
Do it, do it whip your hair!
Your hair, your hair

(chorus x3)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (just whip it)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (whip it real good)
I whip my hair back and forth x4

Bonus: Sesame Street vs. Willow Smith… a mashup of Willow’s Whip My Hair Video and Sesame Street I Love My Hair Video. I think I’ve watched this one more than the original. Had to add it in!

I’m pretty sure I was about 4 or 5 the last time I was caught singing a Sesame Street song… but I can’t get this one out of my head! It doesn’t hurt that it’s a message for little Black girls to love their hair. Enjoy!

Sesame Street – I Love My Hair Lyrics
Don’t need a trip to the beauty shop, ’cause I love what I got on top.

It’s curly and it’s brown and it’s right up there!

You know what I love? That’s right, my hair!

I really love my hair.

I love my hair.

I love my hair. There’s nothing else that can compare with my hair.

I love my hair, so I must declare: I really, really, really love my hair.

Wear a clippy or in a bow Or let it sit in an afro My hair looks good in a cornrow

It does so many things you know, that’s why I let it grow I love my hair, I love my hair I love it and I have to share I love my hair, I love my hair!

I want to make the world aware I love my hair. I wear it up. I wear down.

I wear it twisted all around.

I wear braids and pigtails too.

I love all the things my hair can do.

In barrettes or flying free, ever perfect tresses you’ll see My hair is part of me, an awesome part of me I really love my hair!
