After going to the dominican salon to get a "doobie" i realized i was putting way too much heat on my relaxed hair. I need a change. I'm considering transitioning to natural hair, but do not know where to begin. It is a different world for me. Can anyone make suggestions on how to get started? What to do and NOT to do? etc... Anything would be helpful

Hi Dani,
I am almost 6 months post relaxer. I am noticing a lot of gray hair as my natural hair grows in. Can you tell me if you experienced this with your hair.

Hi, Cheri. Congrats on your transition to natural hair. It looks like you're creeping up on your fourth month soon and have your regimen down. I've been meaning to try a straw set for the last few months so let me know how your hair turns out.

I'm also glad to hear that Carol's Daughter hair products are working so well for you. Thanks for the compliment and I'll try my best to keep making posts that hopefully help you out on your transition.

I did my last relaxer on March 14, 2009. So I'm not sure if that makes me about 4 months into transitioning or 3 months. I am a big fan of the flat twist out, but at the end I do bantu knots and my hair turns out wonderfully. I used to be a big fan of KeraCare products but they started making my natural hair hard. So, I decided to experiment with Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Collection. My regimen is CD's Black Vanilla Shampoo, deep condition with Organic Stimulator Olive Oil Deep Conditioning Pak, CD's Black Vanilla Leave-In Conditioner, Motions Foam Wrap mousse and Elasta QP Glaze for the edges.

Today, I did the straw set for the first time, I wont know how it turns out until tomorrow. I always let my hair air dry. I'm not sure what my hair type is, but it looks like we might have the same natural hair type.

Since using CD's products, my hair is easy to detangle and soft and light. I havent seen my natural hair since I was about 15 yrs old and thats about 18 years ago. So any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. I also love your flat twist out, they work for you.

You're welcome :) I've been hearing about the Bentonite Clay and plan to give it a try in the future. I'm also thinking about giving my hair a break and throwing some braids in it... but I'm ultra careful with my edges now and don't want to take a chance with my progress. So, I'm still thinking about that one, lol.

As for the mineral oil and petroleum... I tend to shy away with from products with them listed. But the jury is still out for me on if they truly clog your pores. They are included in some of my staples... but I see no need to change if the product is working for my hair. At the end of the day you have to do what you feel is best for your hair.

Best Wishes and Good Luck with your transition :)

Thanks for posting this Dani!! My hair is in braids right now so I don't have any staples to share. I did redo my braids today though, I guess I can share my in-between braids regimen, lol. Today I washed with baking soda and water. Then whipped out my bentonite clay which I mix with vinegar and milk. (I have to say it was super soft - milk might just be what bentonite needs) Then I used the aphogee 2 minute reconstructer and followed that up with Lustrasilk (Shea Butter plus Mango) as a deep conditioner. This is my first time using Lustrasilk and I wanted to use the Lustrasilk alone but it has absolutely no slip... but smells like heaven! I tried to detangle and ended up in knots. Hello Hydration came to the rescue and saved the day though. Airdried and braided. I put a dab of raw shea butter on each piece of hair before I start braiding, my hair needed moisture :-)

Most of my transition has been in braids. Since I started transitioning I kinda put all my old stuff in boxes. ALL of it had mineral oil and petroleum. The Aphogee has it also but we rinse it out so thats okay, right??? So I'll let that slide for now until I find something superior to it. Lol.

Take Care!
