This was my first time attempting a flexi rods hairstyle. The results turned out great with the help of LottaBody (Love that stuff!) and I can’t believe that just a few years ago I was completely style challenged and hopelessly dependent on my hair stylist. It felt so good to pull this one off. I always wondered how to use flexi rods, but it really was not that hard. And don’t forget I’m almost 2 years post relaxer (just under 22 months)!!! I’m not going to front, I used way too many flexi rod rollers and was a little scared about how the set would turn out when I was under the dryer… But I promise nobody can tell me anything right now. Lol!
The process was easier than I thought too. I washed and deep conditioned my hair. Next, I filled up a spray bottle (2 parts water and 1 part LottaBody Setting Lotion)and sprayed each section before twisting on a flexi rod. About 3/4 of the way into the set I ran out of the blue ones and starting using the orange ones. Last, I sat under my soft bonnet dryer for a little under 2 hours on warm heat. I’m not sure how all of those rollers made it under the dryer, but I survived! The best part is that my hair held up for a week in record breaking humid weather. The only thing I had to do before leaving out the house was fluff and go. Sooooo happy I found a new transitioning hairstyle!
Check out the pictures below! And I also included pics from a dry flexi rod set that I did back in late May on straightened hair. ETA: Mom, that’s a camisole not my…

As you can see…way too many rollers, lol.

A week later, both sides pinned up.

10 hours later, it was humid outside but I was feeling the big hair result… Haha!

This look is cute on you! I’m currently sporting a bantu knot out that kind of looks like that.
i like your natural hair growth so much.flexi Rods Hairstyle is really very cut.
what is the difference between flexi rods and rollers? is one better than the other?
@ Kayla – Thanks!!!
@ Stephanie – A flexi rod is just a specific type of hair roller that allows you to achieve different types of curls including spiral curls and big and loose curls depending on the size of the rod. Hope that helps
love this blog, great hair and tips too.
yes. thank you and i love your hairstyles
love you
It turned out great. I’m excited to try it on my hair!!!
The big hair result looks really good. Looks like something that I could wear into the office for the professional look as well as head to a lounge for a nite cap.
I love your hair. Looks like mine, I’ve been doing to the flexrods and it holds up pretty good and I’m glad to see the curly mohawk because I’m gonna try to rock that next. I’ve been transitioning for a year and wanted to try and make it another one, as I don’t really want to do the BC. So you are truly an inspiration!
)
A couple of questions:
You’ve been transitioning for 22 mnths, so how much shedding/breaking have you seen? and how much of new growth do you have or is it all yours now?
Thanks and Love the pics!!
Super cute. I could never figure out how to keep the rods in and get nice finished ends. This was a good tutorial. Thanks!
Very cute hairstyles! Nice look using the Flexi Rods
Perfect report! I am only starting out in marketing and advertising and attempting to find out to carry out it nicely – assets just like this write-up are very useful.
I am in transition also and I found that flexi-rods are a sure thing. I am just learning how to use them, but I found that they are the best thing to use when since I workout a lot. I sometime sleep in them, its a pain to do it but I they work….
Nice Hairstyle. I always thought it take plenty work to acheive that look. Thanks for sharing. I will surely give it a try on my daughter.
hii i just decided to natural a few days ago, and im soo o excited! But my hair is really short but with permed ends (basically ive been transitioning uknowingly for almost 2 months and have about an inch of new growth).and i have no idea wat to do with my hair and i need help. i dont want to do the big chop until july and hopefully it will b to my ears by then. i just need styles. im n high school and i also have an embarrasing patch of hair missing in the back of my head and can only hide it with ponytails. thanks alot u guys. ill probably visit this blog alot more.
Love the flexi pics! I was wondering what you used on the wet and dry hair version of it. Any tips for rolling?
I love the hairstyle and have been trying to do it for a while. Never knew about the flexi-rods until now. I have relaxed hair right now and am thinking about going natural. I’ve tried it in the past but my hair breaks off so badly. Instead off using the LottaBody can I use a leave in conditioner? If so, what would you recommend (I want something that will keep my hair hydrated, and soft after its dry while maintaining the curl)? When I do decide to go natural I will definitely refer to your blog.
Thanks
Thank you for sharing this information to us. Hope you could post more photos.
I love this style, but how do you keep it during the night?
I love this style…I’m currently sporting the same style. I tried it for the 1st time a month ago and I loved it so much I did it again the other day. Love, Love your hair!!
You can probably pull off any hairstyle because you are soooo cute
but thanks for the pics and how-to’s. I’m going to try this style on my daughter too!

what is the name of the roller you used for this style ?
Thanks for the comments… Yall are the best!
Makala, the name of the rollers are “flexirods”. I used the short blue ones. You can purchase them online at Amazon
or at any beauty supply store.
heey , your hair looks fabulous ! and how do you pick out your curls ?
im 16 yrs old i cover my hair so all of my friends actually think that im this indian ith long straight black hair but no! my hair is long but really really curly to the point that i cant control it but i like the pinned up sides but how exactly did you do it
I love the curls pin’d up…super cute!
your hairstyles are really cute, but what do you do to your hair for going to sleep? i usually sleep with nothing on it or in my hair, and it lasts me a few days but it starts to lose its curls
I feel the same way. I have never been able to do my own hair. However, since I began tranisition I’ve became a pro. My friends use to laugh at my non-hairstyling ablities and now they put in requests for me to do their hair.
Where did you buy these Flexi Rods from? I can not find them anywhere, online or in stores! Please Answer
Hi Robin&Route, I have found the flex rods on ebay & amazon. They are listed as Diane Twist Flex Rods.
