Every time I log on to one of my favorite hair forums there is a new thread about a horrible experience at the hair salon. I’ve read some mind-blowing stories about hairstylists unsuspectingly relaxing someone’s hair (still trying to figure that one out), chopping off six inches of hair when you only asked for a trim, or raking through natural hair with a fine tooth comb. And it’s usually followed with a discussion about how hairstylists are the worst people on the planet. Do I think hairstylists are evil? Short answer… No.
I think in most cases there is an obvious breakdown of communication between the client and the stylist. Be clear in communicating what you want (and don’t want) done to your hair. Explain what your hair goals are prior to the appointment. For example, if you just want a trim, ask the stylist to show you how much they plan to trim. Make sure your half inch measurement is the same as their half inch. Don’t be afraid to speak up, because at the end of the day, you are the one paying the cost for a service. Make sure they tell you what they’re doing to your hair every step of the way. If you have to… ask for one of those small mirrors so you can watch them like a hawk. Please don’t allow someone to be reckless with your head.
All stylists are not created equal and you also need to accept responsibility. If the appointment starts off bad… 9 times out of 10 your experience will end badly. Don’t wait for it to get worse, get out of the chair and bounce. If you still can’t find a great stylist, learn to do your own hair. Trust me… it saves both money and time. And no one will treat your hair with the same care as you.
